Gadhimai Nepal: Reason for Largest animal sacrifice place in world

REASONS FOR THE GADHIMAI FEST AND SACRIFICE OF ANIMALS AT GADHIMAI TEMPLE

    It is believe that near about 350 years ago, a person named BHAGWAN CHAUDHARY used to live in Bariyarpur of bara district, Nepal. He was great followers and priest of Goddess Gadhimai. Once, goddess Gadhimai asked him for her worship. In the worship of her, she demanded for great worship and five human’s sacrifices every year but that priest was very much poor and refused to provide such worship and sacrifice of five human because it was against the law and also no one will accept it. After that he told the goddess Gadhimai that he was very much poor and did not have that much money for her big worship. The goddess Gadhimai become angry and told him that his all villagers will feel sick and may be die. After that Bhagwan Chaudhary become frightened and told Gadhimai that he will not provide her worship every year but he can provide in each five year. And he will not give sacrifice of any human being but instead of that he will give the sacrifice of animals and birds. He promised to give five Animal’s sacrifice (called BALI in Nepal) instead of five human and said that if the goddess would not accept then he would give his sacrifice and will die.

    After hearing that goddess Gadhimai become very much happy because he became ready to give his sacrifice instead of other people. After that goddess Gadhimai accepted his promise and ready to take her worship in five year and sacrifice of five animals which is also called PANCH BALI. Pancha bali means sacrifice of five animals He-Goat, Pig, Forest's Rat, Buffalo, Local Cock.

    During the other time besides the festival, people comes there to worship the goddess by taking some sweets and coconut with then in order to offer the goddess Gadhimai. They take coconut with them and broke it near the leg of the Goddess Gadhimai on the stone kept there and offer the water of coconut to her and take the rest part with them as a blessing of goddess (which is also known as PRASAD) and eat them with their family and friends.

    Due to the above resons, the worshiping and festival of goddess Gadhimai started to be done in every five year by killing or sacrificing of animals and birds. When the fair starts, many people from different places comes to Gadhimai temple for worship of goddess Gadhimai with lots of sweets and also some people come by taking animals for sacrifice to goddess Gadhimai. People take buffalos, cock, duck, pigeon, he goat etc to the temple of Gadhimai and cut the neck of the animals and offer the blood of them in the name of the goddess Gadhimai and rest part take with them to their home and eat the meat as blessing of Goddess Gadhimai as a PRASAD. People do not used to take the bodies of the buffalos. They leave the body in the cutting place. They do so because almost people of southern part of Nepal don’t eat the meat of buffalos. The lower cast people used to take the dead bodies with them and eat at their home. Now a days, the GADHIMAI MELA COMMISSION used to give that all meat of buffalos in tender to the agent and that agent used to sell that in different part of the country in high price.
